Im Arthur Art Ruebens, a quite well known portrait artist specializing in painting oil portraits from photos.
I was born in 1945 and raised in Brooklyn, NYC. My father was a sculptor and my mother was a high school art teacher so even as a youngster I was always surrounded by art and creative people.
In 1968 I graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree. Rather than heading straight out into the art world I was drafted and headed straight to Vietnam. There I worked as a military artist which involved drawing sketches of enemy positions. After completing my tour of duty I returned to NYC and worked as a commercial artist doing jobs for DC comics, Disney, Warner Bros. and others before entering the teaching profession with a part-time position at the Arts Students League in Manhattan. I then traveled in Europe, doing the artist thing like living on a garret in Paris! I later taught some art classes at Columbia University. It was during this period that I first started to take commissions to paint peoples portraits. Over the last two decades Ive painted hundreds of portraits allowing me to perfect my technique. Usually people came to sit for their portraits but now I work from photos as its more convenient for you and allows me to take commissions from all over the world.
I semi-retired in 2008 and now paint just a few portraits to supplement my pension and I now live in Saigon, Vietnam as the NYC winters are too cold for me, I run a studio of painters here.
I keep my prices very reasonable as I really love to paint and teach other artists.
